New Shark-Repellent Fishing Hook Will Minimize Accidential Shark Catches

Photo by robstephaustralia via Flickr CC Even if you're a friend of sharks, if you like fishing in the open sea you run the risk of snagging a shark here and there. And if you're a commercial fisherman, you're no stranger to sharks showing up as a significant part of your bycatch. It's estimated that tens of millions of sharks end up as accidental bycatch every year. However, a new high-tech fish hook could help keep sharks safer from fishing lines.

REC Solar specializes in grid-tied solar electric design, installation, and financing for commercial and residential customers. The 600-employee firm installed more than 17 megawatts of residential solar in California in 2010 -- enough to rank it as one of California's leading residential solar installers.

The firm's Director of Business Development, Ryan Park, joined REC Solar as the fourth employee.

More important than all of this, however, is that the 31-year-old Mr. Park got the "First Impression Rose" on The Bachelorette last week. I am informed by my co-author that that's really good -- it means she likes him more than the others. (The other solar installers?) Park has no tattoos, according to his bio on the Bachelorette website.

Shares of solar module manufacturers were up zero percent on the news. Rose and chocolate futures as well as pre-nuptial legal fees were up on the report.

Park is still in the running to win the love of a Ms. Ashley Hebert.

Love can overcome all challenges.

Hopefully that includes policy issues, extending the 1603 tax grant program, inflated inventories, and collapsing margins in the solar industry.

Note: this REC Solar is not the same as REC, the large, vertically integrated solar firm headquartered in Norway. Although REC Group does have a stake in REC Solar. That firm is going through its own struggles at the moment -- laying off hundreds of employees and suspending operations in one of its plants. They could use some love as well.

The CEOs of Alta Devices and Amprius spoke at an energy event at Orrick today.

Todd Kimmel of Mayfield Fund called these firms, "really disruptive materials science" at the event in Menlo Park, California.

Alta Devices is a quasi-stealth thin film solar firm. Amprius is a nanostructure battery company.

Chris Norris, the CEO of Alta Devices, a gallium arsenide (GaAs) thin film solar firm that we've covered in detail here spoke at the event but added very little new to what he's already said. Their goal is to "compete with fossil fuels without government subsidies" and get to a levelized cost of energy of $0.06 to $0.07 per kilowatt-hour. Norris said that the firm has received $120 million and thinks they're "half-way there" in terms of amount of funding raised.

Given that the firm is very far from actual production, I'd venture to say that Norris might be mistaken. If the firm is going to be a manufacturer of PV modules or cells at scale, they will have to raise a lot more than $120 million. The coming years will reveal the amount they'll need.

Norris said that the single crystalline, direct bandgap structure of GaAs, "a perfect crystal" distinguishes its technology from the CIGS players.

Last month the firm announced that it received $72 million from August Capital, Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, Crosslink Capital, DAG Ventures, New Enterprise Associates (NEA), Presidio Ventures (a Sumitomo company), Technology Partners, Dow Chemical and new investor Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), Good Energies, Energy Technology Ventures (a joint venture involving GE, ConocoPhilips and NRG Energy), and Constellation Energy. (These days, raising large funding rounds for solar firms obviously requires long lists of investors.)

Kang Sun, the CEO of stealthy battery startup Amprius raised $25 million led by Kleiner Perkins, with VantagePoint, IPV, Trident, Google's Eric Schmidt, and Stanford University. The firm is using a silicon nanostructure to replace a carbon anode system in batteries. Sun claims that silicon has "an intrinsic energy density ten times higher than carbon." He called Amprius "late science stage, early engineering stage" and that the firm's technology is four times better than current technology.

The company started in 2008 with a mission to make anodes and advanced materials that, presumably, it would sell to established manufacturers. According to Michael Kanellos' reporting, Amprius is studying its options: it may produce anodes or it could go into the battery business. A final determination has yet to be made. But clearly, the component option is on the table.

Sun was the founder of solar panel tracker company RayTracker that recently sold to First Solar. He revealed for what I believe is the first public disclosure the sale price of the firm. He said that after receiving $3.5 million in venture funding from Idealab, Quercus Trust, and Phoenix Fire, the investors received a multiple of 12.8 or a sale price of $44.8 million.

Intel and Ford Motor Company plan to retrofit select facilities to see if DC power can really curb their electricity consumption.

Intel will wrap the facility that houses the energy research group, part of Intel Labs, in Arizona in a DC microgrid, according to Brian Patterson, chairman of the Emerge Alliance, an organization dedicated to popularizing DC power. Ford, meanwhile, will retrofit a building that houses both manufacturing and offices to run on DC.

In both examples, DC power will be used to run computers, datacenters, lights and likely the heating and air conditioning systems. Ford may even go farther and add manufacturing equipment to the mix. The Ford facility will also include an energy storage system from Xtreme Power. (Xtreme has racked up a number of high-profile wins for its secretive battery/storage technology, so chalk up another one here.)

DC power didn't go away after Westinghouse won the Battle of Currents 100 years ago. It just went underground. Most electrical items -- notebooks, batteries, ships, planes, electric motors -- actually run on DC. Power gets distributed across the grid as AC, but then gets converted and reduced in voltage -- often a number of times -- before it actually gets consumed. Every conversion results in a loss.

DC power advocates argue that power losses can be reduced with things like DC microgrid. With a microgrid wrapped around a large datacenter, for instance, the number of power conversions can be reduced from five or more down to two. In a datacenter alone, reducing power consumption by 10 percent to 20 percent and reducing floor space by 25 percent to 40 percent.

Solar panels, wind turbines and other distributed power technologies also produce DC power natively. By delivering solar power straight to LED lights, building owners will consume less power. The added bonus: you can also eliminate components like inverters and AC-DC converters.

"The trend toward DC is probably stronger now than at any time in the history of electricity," he said.

Patterson added that some are trying to figure out ways to convert buildings to DC without having to replace the wires. (Last year in Japan, Panasonic told me about plans for "hybrid" wired houses.)

DC is also beginning to challenge AC in high-voltage, long-distance transmission. ABB, which has planted HVDC lines in Europe and China, will help plant one in the U.S. at the Tres Amigas Superstation. Last week ABB bought a controlling interest in Validus DC Systems.

Patterson, by the way, noted that a number of lighting companies -- Acuity, Philips, Osram, etc. -- are members of the Emerge Alliance and will speak this week on how LEDs and DC can cut down power consumption at LightFair.

General Electric, meanwhile, bought DC equipment maker Lineage Power Holdings a few months ago and is working on ways to develop products to run industrial equipment on native DC.

DC. It's not just for crazy people.
